This is great news. Anyone with Brazilian connections want to comment on whether this is because of Lula? I’m inclined to think so but I don’t live there.
Short answer, yes. Long answer would be mostly due to the environment minister not being the one nicknamed “Mr. Chainsaw”, and instead is one of the most respected and accomplished environmentalists in the world.
I was going to ask if the appointments are based on the elected government/party for further elaboration, but thought that would be lazy so did a bit of research.
So yeah, she’s Marina Silva. Lula’s cabinet’s minister of environment and climate change.

That’s such a relief to hear, thanks for sharing.
I just glanced over her Wiki and am happy to see she’s a person with a cause, rooted in civil rights and passion.
should be 100%
This doesn’t happen straight away and probably will never get to this percentage but it’s a huge step
If the rate of 57% less each year remains constant, we’re down to 10.6% after 4 years, and 1.11% after 8 years. So logging could pretty much stop this decade. Again unrealistic, since first chunks are always easier than last bits. Just trying to highlight how much this is.
we had decades though
