War here is a bone chilling prospect, especially as every side feels unable to back down and there are so many nations involved.
It would be especially grievous to have such a war if you know who is reelected.
Peace and democracy both hang from threads, humanity is doomed to forever repeat its mistakes.
Humanity is a pathetic cancer
You sound like Denethor. The internet is our palantir stone maybe.
Wouldn’t be much of a war if he was elected. I can hear it now. “I like allies who don’t get invaded.”
Oh are we back on for 2024? I thought they rescheduled for 2025 🤷♂️
And here I thought I was going to die in a nuclear fireball during a random Friday rush hour in 2028. So excited I don’t have to worry about rent for 4 years now.
Paywalled.
Japan’s outlying islands are seeking independence, I thought? Or was that just a fringe political movement.
The Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa, etc.) aren’t too happy about being the site of 75% of US military bases in Japan (which puts them directly in the crossfire) and which make up 20% of Okinawa Island. US service people in Okinawa have been responsible for raping a 12-year-old Okinawan girl, among other crimes.

cant they just go back to the main islands?
Sure just like Hawaiian people could go back to the upper 48. You know just abandon their home, their livelihoods, their communities. No big deal surely to just give an aggressor nation whatever they want at the cost of all your worldly possessions.
Edit:
From before the paywalled section:
‘’’ “Suddenly, there is all this talk about underground shelters, about fleeing, and this makes this crisis feel more real. But if we leave, can we come back? Or will Yonaguni be wiped out?” asks Mr Otake, wondering if he will be able to hand down the business to his 14-year-old son. ‘’’
Later it mentions there are 1.4 million people in the potential war theatre zone. And yes the plan is to move them back to the mainland if they can, but that’s a monumental task to move that many people across disparate, disconnected islands, to say nothing of the potential impact of trying to integrate 1.4 million people into local communities.
“Can’t they just abandon their homes, lives, and everything they know and move en masse over 1000 km to somewhere else?”
Really??
ok so lets expand on that then - when China attacks & seizes territory thats “theirs” (and the US pushes them back onto mainland Asia), will the Japanese be forced to live under Chinese occupation, or can they seek refuge in Japan proper? the question was answered already by a very helpful someone else.
way to go @osarusan@lemmy.world, way to be as unhelpful as possible.
Ask a shitty question, expect a shitty answer, troglodyte.
I can read half the article. The plan is for them to shelter until they can be moved.
