In this thread I explain my problem. When I switched from Ubuntu to Kubuntu I lost the boot splash that I had with Gnome. I have no idea why. Please help me get the best boot experience from Linux as possible. Thank you.

    If I reinstalled rEFInd would it write over the config file and set it up for Kubuntu.

    Most likely no, the config would probably remain and the new installation would not overwrite it

    I initially installed it while using Ubuntu so I’m wondering if that might be the issue.

    No idea, depends on how you configured it.

    I’m a little worried about editing the config file myself as I don’t want to break anything.

    Copy the file and make a backup just in case, Add a new option there, make it the second one, then during boot manually chose that one, if something goes wrong, reboot and do nothing and you’ll be back the same way you are now. Worst case scenario refind should guess the OS, and if that doesn’t work you can boot into a Live USB and restore the backup.

    If all goes wrong just install from scratch, you’ll lose data in your / partition but that should be just system stuff, as long as /home is in a different partition you shouldn’t lose any personal data. If your /home isn’t in a different partition, next time you install your system consider this, it makes reinstalling in case you fuck up a breeze.
