Welcome to Divergent Parenting. Divergent Parenting is a lemmy instance dedicated to the parents and caregivers of neurodivergent children and dependents.
Divergent Parent has some very basic site-wide rules:
- Be respectful. Everyone should feel welcome here. Parent shaming will not be tolerated.
- No bigotry. This includes but is not limited to: racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, and xenophobia.
- No Ads or Spamming. Self-promotion is allowed only in communities where is has been explicitly permitted.
- NSFW content is allowed in order to allow discussion of sensitive topics. However, no pornography or overly sensual content is allowed.
We are a caregiver-space first and foremost. However, we do welcome dependents, neurodiverse adults, and allies. We ask that they follow our rules and are respectful of the caregivers in this space giving and seeking support.
What is Lemmy?
Simply put, Lemmy is a bunch of mini reddits that can talk to each other. This is like the forums of old, except that you can see and interact with the posts from other forums while logging in to your preferred forum. Learning all the details of Lemmy can take some time, so you can visit c/Lemmy Help, to ask questions and see what information already exists. Lemmy.World also has a very good getting started guide
What exactly does neurodivergent mean?
Neurodivergent is a relatively new term. When people think of it, what immediately springs to mind are conditions like austism and ADHD. However, neurodiversity covers far more conditions like anxiety and dyslexia. The Cleveland Clinic explains the idea very well. Being neurodivergent is not a well defined term because it’s an idea and not a medical definition. Neurodiversity however does present some unusual challenges for parenting, which is why this instance was created.
Can I be here if my child isn’t neurodivergent?
Sure. All parents are welcome. Parenting techniques that work well on neurodiverse children can work well for neurotypical children and vice-versa.
