The Black and White series was originally hyped by the always passionate Peter Molyneux. Back in 2001, the first Black and White was being hyped up to be the greatest game of all time. Since then, a sequel was released in 2005 called Black and White 2, which was even more forgotten. Was this a worthy sequel to step the genre forward, or did the series once again fall short of expectations?
I was absolutely excited for Black and White when I was younger. In school we had to write an article for English class and I chose to write about Black and White’s upcoming release. I got a good mark from it and my English teacher was equally intrigued.
The game came out and I sunk a good amount of hours into it. Was it the best game? No of course not, but it gave me great memories. I don’t think I’ll ever go back and play it again as it won’t live up to the nostalgia, but it would be interesting if someone attempted to tackle this kind of genre again.
Oh oh!!! I had the same experience but with an AMAZING anticlimax. So when the game came out it was only available for purchase in a localised version, with a horrible Swedish dub.
For context, Sweden has an official policy of not dubbing essentially anything for anyone over maybe seven years old. No other game I know of was translated even (except the sims), and certainly not dubbed. We made fun of how terrible and corny that version was for years. It sounded like morning cartoons for babies, probably because the same cast who did Sailor Moon and Pokémon did it.
I’ve never played the real version, and only sparingly played the horrific dub because the family computer wasn’t good enough.
Ooooh, we’ve got this notion
That we’d quite like to sail the ocean
So we’re building a big boat to leave here for good.
Black & White 3 should open on these guys finally reaching new land where the next god begins.
As amazing as this would be, I don’t think I want a Black and White 3 in today’s market. You probably will get 1 type of creature and additional creatures are gonna be a micro transaction.
You forgot the holy battle pass for exclusive creature skins. That’s too pessimistic. Maybe it’s been a while since I played them, but I think Black & White 1 + 2 had the scope of what an ambitious indie game is capable of today. Or a (these days) rare “AA” budget game. A modern B&W could be similarly scaled to the originals, but expanding on them creatively. Though of course the IP would never be granted to indie devs if anyone still holds the rights of Lionhead Studios.
Someone needs to give this type of god game/digital pet game another go. This is the sort of stuff that would be perfect on VR.
Especially with the guesture-based casting. It’s like it was made for VR.
