Welcome to the Free Talk Tuesday Discussion!
What are you up to this week? Want to discuss gaming news? Or maybe share your progress in a game. Any non-gaming related posts are also allowed in this thread to be shared with like-minded people here.
How many of us really give much thought to the audio aspect of games? For me, poor audio implementations, bad music, and lousy sound effects can destroy immersion. As an audio professional in the gaming industry it’s always fun to hear other people’s opinions on the matter.

There’s some games where audio can be utterly amazing and completely make the game for me. Persona 4 and 5 are both like this. The music is so iconic that it’s the extremely rare case of me actually remembering video game music. I almost never do that. I’m not saying I don’t enjoy game music, but most of it just isn’t memorable to me and I will never be able to recognize it if you played it to me and asked me where it’s from.
Beyond music, voice acting is the other big one for me. But I don’t usually have concerns with the voices themselves. It’s the animations that I constantly dislike. I swear, 95% of games suck at matching lips to audio. It constantly just feels wrong.
As for sound effects, I don’t notice them much. But on the topic of audio, I really hate when games depend on audio or even worse, positional audio. I’m hearing impaired and have a cochlear implant. I basically only hear in one ear. I don’t have directional audio. And I’m not good at detecting small changes in sound, so I can’t easily do stuff like locate the source of a sound. If a sound is loud and distinctive, I’m fine with sound indicators, but if it’s a quiet or subtle sound, I can miss such indicators. Of course, there’s also other people who have it worse, so game devs should avoid making sound a dependency to do things.
A friend got me into GTA Online recently but having npcs snipe me out a jet isn’t really fun so I’m probably gonna go pick up planetside again
That’s why i never played public lobby’s… too many trolls. Tbf that was like 4 years ago.
What are some new games coming out soon that you are excited to see?
And is anyone else playing Dead Island 2 besides me?
I’m looking forward to Starfield, although it’ll probably be quite buggy for some time, we’ll see.
Right now I’m playing Gotham Knights (kinda boring) and Civilization 6.
Looking forward to Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on PC. Probably the game that made the choice between PS5 and PC the most difficult for me. Just gonna hold off to see if it’s a decent port first.
The new armoured core game comes out next month and is looking awesome. Also excited for spiderman 2
Looking forward to Starfield, Hades 2 and P3 Remaster.
I’m getting sold on Cities Skylines II from the teasers they keep releasing, so I might pick that up. Most of the other stuff on my wishlist right now is still TBA in terms of release date, but The Talos Principle 2 is slated for this year, so I’m excited for that; I really enjoyed both the themes and the puzzles of the first one, it was a great experience.

Look at games like high fleet and mech engineer on PC. They have kinda non-standard UI.
I started Zelda-totk a week or two later (after release) and finally got around to the finale last night. They did a great job and I loved it. Now I have game withdrawals, but the completionist in me has left little on the table. Time to get back to life before TotK…
Exoprimal isn’t fantastic, but it does seem like the most innovative use of “PVPVE” we’ve seen in a while. I remember a long while back, various companies having crazy ideas for how such things might take place.
Heck, in a weird way, I actually think it might cater to a lot of the things Overwatch 2 players are missing now. It exposes lore about its characters after every match. The suit voices all have bits of personality to them. There’s a low-pace environment to work out better tank/assault/support strategies, and there’s not even role locks - nor are the healers relegated to just healing (there is NO Mercy “all I do is heal” character)
Definitely can’t say I’d pay $60 for it so far, so I’m glad it’s on Game Pass.
