Release is on-track for the 29th of August. Huzzah!
Hope it’s a good a place as any to ask this. I’ve got an itch for a jrpg in the classic style, but one with modern conveniences.
Never finished FFVI because I put it down and later didn’t know where I was nor was doing. Completed Golden Sun I and II, but only with the aid of walkthroughs. Tried a buch of others but don’t really remember them.
Edit: Recommendations for a great modern JRPG in the classic style?
CrossCode - this isn’t a jrpg nor a classic style per ser but I’d say it’s heavily inspired by them. I’ve been playing it for a while and it really is a gem of a game. Check it out if it’s your thing.
Other modern games which are a jrpgs that I haven’t played but heard good things are Chained Echoes and Octopath Traveller. Those are akin to retro classic style jrpgs
I love seeing all the CrossCode recommendations, and on Lemmy of all places. Here I thought no one knew about it!
Easily my favorite game of all time. I don’t think it ever drops the ball, the combat is awesome, the story is incredible, and the characters are so well written that you’ll think they’re actually real people.
The biggest criticism is the game’s puzzles, but they aren’t really as bad as some (very impatient) people make them out to be, and there are options to decrease the difficulty of the puzzles.
Dude I had CrossCode on my wishlist for years and forgot about it, until I watched a video praising it and saying to not let indie games like this one die in obscurity when they deserve much more attention.
So I bought it on last Steam sale and fuck, I wholeheartedly agree with that video. I just beat my first dungeon and it’s such a beautiful and fun game - the characters being one of my favorite aspects.
It’s painfully sad how severely underrated CrossCode is. It needs more praise and love so I’m doing my best to raise awareness of it lol.
Wouldn’t be surprised if this one becomes one of my favorites.
I love crosscode. Although I’d say it is more of an action rpg than a jrpg. The combat system is real time hack and slash with only a select set of special abilities you unlock as you play.
Still, the other elements are very jrpg-ish. Loads of people, items, and exploration. And lots of talking.
Definitely Chained Echoes. It has a lot of modern touches.
You get healed after every fight and so you actually get to use skills. You only level up after boss battles so the game is scaled properly and you dont need to grind. The overheat system is also a good mechanic to spice up turn-based battles.
If you have a Switch, I definitely recommend Fire Emblem: Three Houses as a modernization of the Tactics RPG genre.
It’s hard when we don’t know what you have played. My go to recommendation is always Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch if you never played it. It will always hold a special place in my heart. I feel Octopath and Bravely Default are played by 99% of people interested in jrpgs. Chained Echoes should be a good recommendation as well. But you might have played all these.
Basically the only JRPGs that I remember anything of, story or mechanics wise, is FFVI and Golden Sun I&II. So really a blank slate and looking at at pretty much all recommendations.

Well, what’s your question?
Oh, kind of missed that. Recommendations for a great modern JRPG in the classic style?

I heavily recommend CrossCode. Hands-down one of my all time faves.
Chained Echoes was also published by Deck13 and is equally amazing. It’s turn-based, unlike CrossCode.
