Blood rain, giblets, and warm bullet casings
Mild, sharp, and sharper cheese tastings
Metal dudes shredding their taut guitar strings
These are a few of my favorite things

  • Tangentially related, but the fox game show “1% club” is, perhaps unintentionally, a fascinating demonstration of how vastly different people think through logic problems.

The premise is the contestants go through a series of questions already asked to a sample of Americans and progress in order of how “difficult” they are based on how many got them wrong.

The interesting part comes when there can be a significant gap in what I perceive the difficulty to be between questions. Sometimes I may have trouble with an “easy” one but get a significantly “tougher” one no problem.

It seems like lunacy to me, but all it really means most times is the format or mechanics of the logic needed for the answer is just more natural to me than the majority of the sample.

  • Love these, thanks as always.

Played a few demos at Next Fest, mostly games I’d been following for a bit. Was most impressed by Jump Ship. It’s in a very solid place getting ready to head into early access. I feel like they’ll use that to mostly fill out content because the bones are fantastic. And that’s not to say it’s lacking content anyway. It is a large demo. And it should be more solo friendly than Firebreak is reported to be.

On that note, I encourage you to temper expectations for Firebreak and utilize a game pass service to play it if you have one vs buy. I’m a Control fan, but also a big coop shooter fan (come play Darktide with me), and Firebreak did not impress when I played the closed tech test. There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with it, but it was pretty bland for the genre and I don’t think there’s supposed to be a lot of lore development for the remedyverse. Solo is also something they are explicitly not balancing the game for. So I’d encourage not buying right away if that’s your plan for it.

  • Indeed. Ice Pirates, Mac n Me, and Tammy. They all encapsulate slightly different aspects of filmmaking that make me appreciate them. And I’m not really into ironically liking bad movies, but I adore these. Mac n Me is legit hilarious to me when viewed with a cynical eye of Raffill making a mockery that McDonald’s gave him money to ripoff ET. Ice Pirates shows how you make an old sci-fi “epic” on a shoe string budget (Roger corman style). Tammy shows how you manifest a movie solely around the fact you got access to some interesting thing (the t-Rex). It’s pure, distilled filmmaking, imo. And I’ll take it any day over the majority of slop we get now.

  • I wont discount your assessment of the overlap (or lack thereof) between the lemmy demo and sports demo. But I’ll submit to you a factor you, and many others, may not have considered. I fit into both demos but simply lost all interest in keeping up with sports after the pandemic. It just really put into perspective how much they don’t matter to me and I haven’t gotten back into them. I’m curious if this happened in any kind of significant amount. And things haven’t progressed in the world to make getting back into them a big desire. I do still tune in the occasional Stanley Cup playoff game if I happen to come across it with nothing better going on. But I haven’t made sports a primary hobby of mine since 2019 and I don’t think I’m ever going to again. And it used to be my primary hobby. I wasn’t fantasy league and sport book level, but I scheduled life around games and teams and spent lots of time in forums.

  • I upgraded my rig after the beta just for this game. I’m playing it with plenty of frames after the new drivers and dlss 4, no frame gen. I have an i9-1400kf and 4080, way out of average range. It defaults to ultra everything. It still looks like absolute shit. I can’t believe they released this.

It’s a major shame because combat feels amazing. But they are ship of Theseusing MH. So many little baffling decisions. The scout flies aren’t actually as bad as I thought they would be. But there is just so much shit on the screen all the time. And the available settings don’t help so mod is the only hope I guess. They redesigned the item box interface, so 15 years of muscle memory is worthless and I think they removed the ability to sort items cuz I haven’t found the button to do it yet. You can’t simply open the menu and look at your status to include food skill descriptions anymore (or I can’t figure out how). There is no MH language?!? At this point I feel lucky they left in cat noises for felynes cuz the subtitles of their dialogue show me I’d have refunded if it was stuck in English.

I had a sense of awe and…pride?… when world was such a hit after loving this niche title for so long. But I got a sense of the transformation that was coming due to westernization/casualization and it’s just a let down. Idk why they didn’t have faith in their original, more whimsical vision.

    God save the portable team.
