Honestly the pla could have just been wet from the factory, I’ve had rolls from top tier filament companies come with condensation in the vacuum sealed bag, sometimes stuff slips through.

Popping and oozing is almost a guarantee that your filament is wet.

For the cost it would take to downsize you would be better off just buying a smaller printer. Maybe sell the plus to offset the cost? Or maybe build an enclosure/end table around the printer to hide it away when not in use

Literally use one just like this to feed filament to the extruder - has feed and retract buttons and can also double as a filament runout switch as well
