At least lemmy has lots of mirrored communities so if one starts to suck you can go to a smaller one with the same topic
Yeah look at how every single conversation about supporting small businesses went on reddit. Users would rage day and night about the ills of megacorporations. But if you got them talking about supporting small business they’d come out of the woodwork to tell you they’re not paying a higher price. And with things being as tight as they are right now, that’s a logical conclusion. But it just goes to show that even if you sit someone down and explain to them that X thing they say they support absolutely cannot compete with the price of Y thing they say they hate - they will still side with their pocketbook 9/10 times
I don’t think you realize how incredibly short 10 years is in terms of investment recuperation. That’s not realistic unless you’re talking about abandoning capitalism all together, at which point the particulars of IP law are irrelevant
Individuals and small companies would never be able to compete with the resources of someone like Amazon
I’m surprised no one has mentioned a specific filter or trick for just emulating this on modern screens. Surely one exists?
Edit: Literally the comment right below mine: gamescope
Oh boy, Cpt. Kirk’s eye shadow? Just have to tell ourselves that male beauty standards changed over the centuries lol
witty commentary on current issues
Am I the only one who doesn’t enjoy the twitter-takes? Don’t get me wrong, I actually agree with most of the takes. It’s just that it all feels like they’re trying to one-up each other with the cleverest gotcha and it makes me roll my eyes. Maybe I’m just not the target audience for a twitter/mastodon style community
I’d just log off lol
How about you use the most basic social etiquette available and be at least not a total asshole.
And how about I take this chance to remind everyone that we can all block the users we don’t want to interact with. And that maintaining a block list is a great way to ensure a decent online experience
In agreement with your broader point but a different approach: to say that we should die out as a species due to climate change is over-simplifying, imo. Yes, there are hardships ahead and we truly need to look at ourselves as a species and ask what needs to change for the sake of ethics and others. However, we have been in dire situations before, albeit with less foreknowledge. Would someone living in, say, 1840 have wished that humanity had died out in the bronze age collapse, when the near-entirety of known civilization collapsed due to climate change?
When considering the entire species we can’t take such a short term view. Yes, hard times are ahead. Yes, we will get through it. I say if one is inclined not to have kids, he should not have kids. But if one is inclined to do so, he should do so
Using Connect too, surprised I don’t hear more about it. It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty solid
Did you spell comeuppance like that on purpose?
Is it not because of hexbear deforking?
Wow it’s almost like we’re in a text-based platform where tone can be confused and there are certain markers we use to indicate tone. But that’s cool we can just resort to being smartasses instead of discussing like adults
Someone else kinda brought up the idea of just adding topic tags to posts, that way the good parts of the current system will remain in place, but users can also browse by topics. Maybe that’s a solution?
I didn’t say reddit was a centralized heaven I was simply pointing out that reddit’s model shouldn’t be followed strictly here. It’s a hypothetical design discussion, not a big deal. If you feel strongly enough about that you struggle to discuss without cussing at others in all caps, maybe you should log off and take some time to chill out :)
I would imagine it working just like on reddit and lemmy, where it can originally be claimed by the original poster or anyone who wants it. It’s obviously not an ideal solution, but it’s worked well enough historically. Maybe someone else would have a better idea
Post some yourself :) we have to move beyond consumption if we want these communities to grow
I could tolerate almost every redditism if it weren’t for the belittling, argumentative, and self-righteous tones that permeated every front page discussion
