  • I was not technically a newbie since I had previously used ubuntu in the distant past (as if ubuntu would truly prepare someone for a more advanced distro), and probably a few others I can’t remember, but I came back with EndeavourOS and I’m having a great time. I did have a few challenges though I am fairly tech savvy and I knew what I was getting into so I was definitely not a regular novice.

After a single serious oopsie that bricked my system but I was able to fix I’ve been running a very stable system. I’ve kept with it for nearly 2 years now on my initial install with practically no issues, at least none I wasn’t willing and able to solve. I troubleshot an issue I was having with a package installation the other day without finding any help online and that made me proud of myself.

I would have considered myself a decent power user on windows, and I feel like a sub average arch user, but hey I get to learn and improve more now.

  • To provide some additional anecdotes to support jul’s comment. I’ve personally been experiencing better performance than windows even with nvidia. Though it does vary per game, with the occasional workaround especially when going outside the realm of plug and play to mod games.

I’d say most games are great, the “10% low” games are still good, and the “1% lows” where things just don’t work are pretty rare but sometimes there is a fix. Proton.db is a good resource for those instances.

And being honest… windows has those moments too, people just ignore them because windows is the ubiquitous gaming OS.

It’s a lot better than when I had last “tried” and it may be more impactful to bring up that this time I haven’t gone back even once, and I actually went ahead and pulled the plug on my windows partition.

Linux is just better now, there’s one thing windows had but I gave it up. Linux is just better for most things now and to make that win even better… windows has increasingly been becoming worse than itself.

I’ve seen a big uptick in that word usage, I don’t like seeing them and use a replacing extension to intercept and censor them to a more appropriate word, while showing an asterisk so I know it was censored. Now I don’t have to see the word, but I still get to see who is being a bigoted jerk.

Edit: ya so I guess on lemmy people think it’s cool to throw ableist slurs.

  • I just started using it today after seeing a comment on it, it may have been yours and it seems fantastic, I took a look at their demo searches and it reminded me of old google while still keeping elements from new google I find useful, and being able to disable or disable any feature I want is amazing.

I haven’t dug in too deep on making my own lenses yet, since they had some very sensible defaults (I mean seriously they have a default lemmy/fediverse lens) but that feature seems incredibly cool and useful if I want to set up something to easily search a variety of niche, focused websites on a subject I want to search on a regular basis.

I was worried about it not featuring conversions/math stuff but prepared to use WolframAlpha for that, but it included them, the only thing is oddly after providing the answer to my test math query of 88+17 it showed search results from the quran and the bible lol. But I suppose that was just a minor oddity.

  • I’m sure it would be pretty simple to put a simple code in the pixels of the image, could probably be done with offset of alpha channel or whatever, using relative offsets or something like that. I might be dumb but fingerprinting the actual image should be relatively quick forward and an algorithm could be used to detect it, of course it would potentially be damaged by bad encoding or image manipulation that changes the entire image. but most people are just going to be copy and pasting and any sort of error correction and duplication of the code would preserve most of the fingerprint.

I’m a dumb though and I’m sure there is someone smarter than me who actually does this sort of thing who will read this and either get angry at the audacity or laugh at the incompetence.

  • Personally if I’m talking to anything that has any degree of intelligence or sentience I use kind language. Not only does every living thing deserve it, but it also is just nice for me in the moment too. It’s like a feedback loop of kindness, what goes around comes around, and I like feeling like a good person and seeing the reactions to that kindness.

Besides, my personal belief is everything has value and consciousness and we are all a part of the same consciousness, so in a way I also see it as being nice to myself in the end.
