  • Fuck Putin, the warmongering cunt. I hope Ukraine continues to get Western support and can kick Russia out of their country, however slim the chances might be looking right now. Russia extending its influence and things gradually going back to business as usual, only for them to do it again in another 10 years won’t be good for any Western democracies.

Haven’t really been following the Israel/Palestine thing much to be honest, but it would be nice if people would stop killing one another. Also really sucks that it benefits Putin.

  • I was watching a video by right to repair advocate Louis Rossman yesterday and he was basically saying that he’s fine to go after big companies and the government to try and get right to repair passed, but he doesn’t want to fuck with Scientology because they appear to be psychos that will harass the shit out of him and probably wreck his life if he gets in their way. Apparently they are anti-right to repair because they have some fake ass thetan reading machines they sell for $5000.

Anyway, he mentions some of the shit they did in his video, and while I’m not sure if it’s a fact or not, he does mention that they were going after the IRS for years to try and get out of paying taxes after laws changed and they lost their tax-exempt status. After a huge amount of harassment and other crime against the IRS over 37 years, they eventually got their taxes reduced from something like a billion+ dollars to $12.5 million… How did they not just end up in jail?

  • I’ve had a Pixel 4a and now have a Pixel 7. I also had a Nexus 5 a long time ago, and a OnePlus 5T for a while after the Nexus 5’s camera broke.

Pixel 4a was great aside from the lack of waterproofing. I loved the size of it, it was fast enough, the camera was good enough, and I didn’t think I’d need another phone until I went hiking in the rain with it and couldn’t be bothered to go 100m back to the car to get a ziplock bag at the start of the hike :/

Pixel 7 is good, but I preferred the smaller size of the 4a, and some of the 7’s features just feel unnecessary to me, such as the higher refresh screen, as I don’t care about gaming on it. The in-screen fingerprint reader is definitely waaaaay worse than the one on the 4a (and especially the OnePlus 5T), and I have to enter my code a lot, but it’s not as bad as when I first got the phone. The insanely bright glow of the fingerprint reader when you use it at night is a bit annoying, as others have mentioned.

It also seems to get very hot sometimes, the official case isn’t quite as nice as that of the 4a, despite being more expensive, and the battery life is meh. Lack of a headphone jack is also less than ideal, but I guess I should just buy some bluetooth earphones. Actually, I got it at launch and used the Google Store points to buy Google Buds Pro and the case, but then I sold the buds to effectively get a nice discount instead.

The camera on both phones has been great, with the 7 being quite a bit better than the 4a, though honestly the 4a was good already and I didn’t really care about any camera upgrades aside from the wide angle lens, which is awesome.

Software wise, I like stock Android, but I miss the long screenshot function of OnePlus’ Oxygen OS. Other than that, it’s nice. Google apps are mostly awesome, though I think you can get the same features such such as voice assistant, navigation etc. on other Android phones just by installing the Google apps.

  • What actually happens when servers are federated with one another? Does the content of each server get mirrored for redundancy, or does it just mean that users can see users, posts and communities from servers that are federated? When they defederate, does content that was previously visible to users just vanish completely, or is it merely that new content (created after defederation) will not be visible?

  • Although I loved R-Type 2 as a kid, I never really got into the first one for some reason - it was probably because I didn’t have a pirated copy on my Amiga, whereas I did for R-Type 2. Both amazing games though, and I’m very glad R-Type Dimensions exists on Steam.

R-Type Delta is #1 R-Type for me though. Best level design, best music, best ships before it went completely nuts for Final.

  • Bottom line won’t change when users of your product are addicted. Since coke etc. are full of sweetener, which I assume causes a similar level of addiction to regular sugar, those that drink it won’t mind if the price goes up 5 cents or whatever because cola put some slightly better sweetener in it. Cola would probably just make a new branded version or slap a “new an improved flavour” on the can and jack up the price by 10 cents anyway. Actually, people are pretty particular about the flavour, so that’s probably why they won’t do it. They must have gradually shitted up the recipe to get to the current version so people didn’t burn down coke HQ.

  • I was exaggerating, sorry :) I don’t know what that is in today’s money and am too lazy to find out, but it’s a lot. I don’t know exactly the difference between regular home console carts like those for Megadrive and SNES, and those for the Neo-Geo, but I think the main difference was that the Neo-Geo was essentially an arcade system, so didn’t sacrifice anything for the home cartridge version. I think the price was mainly so much higher due to the comparatively huge ROM chips back when memory was rather expensive. Typical SNES games were 8 megabits I think, and the largest (according to Wikipedia) was 48. Neo Geo could go much higher and games were often 100 megabits or more.
