Not a ROM hack, but Redigit, before going on to make Terraria, made something called SMB X, remixing SMB 1, 2, 3, World, and Zelda 1 and 2. It also had its own level editor. Totally fun.

The reverse order for me. A borrowed NES first at 5-6, then a secondhand C64 at 8. Learned to type and program BASIC on that thing.
Replaying Super Mario World for SNES with my five-year-old. First time for him, he loves Yoshi. I haven’t really played it all the way through in about a decade; my wife and I did it together when we were engaged, was the last time.
