Sometimes you have to pay for keeping things free, if that makes any sense.

FOSS can’t exist in a vacuum. The developers spend a lot of time on things and they need to be paid for their efforts, otherwise we won’t get great products like Sync.

If you want things that are well maintained and supported, then there has to be income for those owners to provide those services.

Sync for lemmy is a top tier client. I’m willing to pay to get and support that model. It’s not like the 17 dollars a year is a big deal. I spend more than that on a single sushi roll sometimes.

  • I’ll admit you make some fair points.

This pair are completely incompetent and should absolutely never become parents/grandparents.

However the fact that police investigated, asked for chat logs from a social media provider, and are intimidating the two of them and we’re all talking about it is the entire point.

Fear. They want us to be at reach others throats on this issue.

You sound like a reasonable person. I think we can both agree that what the police are doing right now is wrong. Even at 20 weeks, which is very late in the pregnancy game, as you say, the decision for what to do with her body should have been between her and her doctor only.

We should not have courts getting involved in this crap again like it’s pre the 70s all over. Those were not good times for women.

The two of them could absolutely have been smarter about what they did. But what they did shouldn’t be receiving national attention because it should have stayed between the two of them and their doctor.

  • If we don’t make changes, it is catastrophic.

Saying the ship you’re on is taking in water and likely going to sink, is still a very important piece of information to communicate, even if nobody has a bilge pump on hand.

Some people are ignoring the evidence of water pouring into the holds of our ship and screaming that we’re not sinking, and that’s causing a lot of confusion. Confusion that’s keeping us from coordinating properly on how best to keep the ship afloat.

Even if we don’t manage to save the ship, keeping it floating as long as possible gives us more opportunities to be rescued.

  • Same. Late to the conversation here, but in the same camp. About to delete a 13.5 year old account.

I’d be fine with Reddit making money, if they did it in an honest and predictable way. The way they’re going about it though is short sighted, deceitful, and completely unnecessary.

They could make money hand over fist if they just tweaked their approach a tad, kept the community happy, etc.

Bundle API usage in with Reddit Premium. Have it use upper limits of say 100k requests/month to the API. Anything over that and it’s on a per 10k/requests billing cycle sort of thing.

Push the cost to the consumer, so if AI wants to scrape all the data, they can pay for it just like everyone else.
