  • The problem is that most of the ‘spam’ comes from official things like websites that you’ve signed up to and didn’t realise would also include dumb fkn emails periodically. And they don’t always do it right away either. I’ve had emails suddenly start arriving from somewhere that I signed up to like a year before.

Personally, my spam mitigation is to have one email address for signing up to shit with. Then these assholes can email me until they’re blue in the face and I don’t care because the only time I ever visit that inbox is for verification. And then I have another email address for personal use that never gets used because who uses email for personal use these days?

In conclusion. Email is for signing up to things and collecting trash that I’ll never look at.

  • Sega Mega Drive for me. We had knock off NES consoles in my country with 100 in 1 cartridges but we just called those “TV games”. Nintendo never bothered with any non first world country back then, so pirates picked up the slack. I don’t think I even knew of the ‘Nintendo’ brand when I was a little kid until I started using the internet and collecting magazines.

But Sega wasn’t quite as stiff upper lip and exclusive as Nintendo and had no problem with lowering themselves and selling their goods to us plebs in the 3rd world. So Sega was the premium brand here and “TV games” were just cheap shit in comparison in my eyes.

We had a knock off NES when I was a little kid (called a Pegasus) but my first actual legit name brand console was the Sega Mega Drive.

Wish I still had it. When I was about 13, I went through a really dumb phase for about 1 month total where I decided I was too grown up for this stuff and I sold my Mega Drive and comics for enough money to buy one CD, probably of a band that I don’t even listen to anymore. Regret it to this day.

  • Yeah, every time I see people saying that they like the amount of users now just makes me think “hmmm must be nice that all of your particular niches and tastes are accounted for”. It’s pretty silly to be so anti growth for this place anyway. Even on Reddit, you literally have a choice to take part in the bigger ‘default’ subs or find a smaller one if that suits you. And I like choice.

This place still has a long way to go IMO. I’m starting to resort to lurking chat / ask style communities more just for something to do around here and even there, it’s not quite as engaging or active as it should be. As a humble user, sometimes I don’t have something particular in mind that I want to see. Sometimes I just want to bed rot and scroll and read people’s stories and discussions, maybe give my two cents if I feel so inclined. And there isn’t really that here yet because once you’ve checked AskLemmy or whatever, you’ve already seen 90% of the content for the next week.

I look forward to all of the Fable ‘fans’ coming out of the woodwork to complain that the female characters and designs don’t look like porcelain anime supermodels. It’s going to be X-Men '97 all over again with a bunch of people that clearly weren’t ever fans of the original complaining about their “childhoods being ruined.”

I suggest that any and all one handed Gamers™ first take a look at the original character designs before opening their stupid mouths and complaining about the wOkE agENdA making characters uglier.

I definitely understand the aversion to algorithms because just look at what platforms like Facebook, Twitter or even Reddit these days do with them. In the wrong hands, it’s deceptive and dodgy as fuck.

But I wouldn’t be opposed to an algorithm that you can tailor yourself. And I don’t mean Bluesky style ‘tailoring’, I mean give us a list of interests and categories to toggle that then have more weight in the feed. So for example, if you like metal, you would then see more metal related stuff in your feed and not have it downed out by Taylor Swift and Kanye West because upvotes.

And something I picked up from Facebook (even though it doesn’t work for shit on Facebook because their algorithm is mentally handicapped) is being able to ‘favourite’ something. And by doing that, not just pinning it to the top of the list of communities but actually making it appear in your feed more whether the upvotes are a high amount or not.

  • No sympathy here. If you ever thought in the first place that the right wing christian nationalists were really all about freedom, then you’re a dumb piece of shit and the only way that you’ll learn about how fire works is to get burnt by it. I’m not even exaggerating. These people didn’t trick everyone with some master plan, they were calling for the rights of entire groups of people to be stripped away and wanting to force their one religion onto everyone whether they like it or not all along, openly.

If that is your definition of ‘freedom’, then you don’t even know what basic fucking words mean. And it’s no wonder you are so easily fooled by greasy fucking slimeballs that anyone with at least half a brain could see weren’t on the level from a mile away.

I feel really bad for the people who have to share a country with these fucking clowns that are going to suffer too. But as far as these red hat mouth breathers go, I hope they suffer like never before. Hopefully they drop dead like flies too so that they don’t just vote for the same fucking people next time.
