  • 1 billion means you only earned the first score extend right? I’m very impressed you survived to stage 5 yet didn’t score even close to the 2nd score extend. I think if you figure out how to do a little scoring in the first 2 stages the game will really come alive and you might also pocket the extend at 10billion sometime in stage 4 or so. You clearly have the skills to dodge/bomb/hyper when necessary.

I only played black label (steam version and also an arcade near me has a DFKBL pcb) but the second score extend is basically mandatory for me to get to the end of stage 4 or have a chance of going to stage 5. And before that, getting the first score extend would get me to the hidden extra life in stage 3 etc. Scoring is good for survival and I think it’s fun to play for score even at the level where we can’t currently 1cc. Gives a goal/benchmark for how I’m playing

  • (cont.) Guild wars 2 is another mmo that is worth trying to see if you like the feel of the action combat. You can again play a whole lot free, but you do have to pay if you want the expansion content (which i feel is kind of diabolical to lock mounts behind max level expansion content). I also do not like that you can buy in game currency with real money, and then buy legendary (best in slot) weapons off the trading post with in game currency.

Theres maplestory which is mainly singleplayer, just make sure you make your char on the reboot (non-p2w) servers. Scratches the itch.

Honorable mention to private/classic servers like tera classic which i’ve been meaning to try out. The population being tiny is the most obvious factor but it is nice that the game has been preserved at all for people to play.

  • Ffxiv has a lot of content available in the free trial but it is not really a “free mmorpg” since if you want to do content that released less than 6 years ago, or join/use FC guilds or linkshell chats, or trade, have any significant quantity of gil, get housing, or use player markets, then you have to buy the game and pay a subscription. Mahjong is free though and it’s quite a good mahjong client.

That said, it is a good way to figure out if you like the basic gameplay systems: the UI and menus which are very customizable, controls (switch to legacy if using M&KB), tab target combat and global cooldown, main scenario questing, instanced dungeons and normal mode bosses, unlocking multiple jobs to try out.

All this with the caveat that basically all jobs at level 70 feel like an empty shell of the combat rotation of level 100, and high end content is only available and populated for the most recent patches + the 6 ultimate raids.

  • basically, instead of nerfing picto they buffed everything else. The biggest changes are:

VPR: removed their boss side debuff that causes more 10% damage, and baked extra potency into the regular abilities (sorta like leaden fist / monk stuff).

BLM: Buffs via enochian, f4, despair and some aoe stuff, re-addition of ice paradox, and a QOL change to Umbral Soul that pauses the eno timer indefinitely after you press it.

SAM: Basically got a mini rework, tsubame is no longer tied to a Meikyo or Tsubame-gaeshi timer, you literally just hit Kaeshi Setsugekka after every single midare. This screws with the loop, you have to do 1 more gcd per minute which means no filler at 2.14/2.15. Ad hoc play unaffected. This also single handedly makes speed samurai viable as this is a pretty massive buff to the basic 10 (previously 9) gcd loop of building up 3 sen and doing your double midare.

  • Some old friends had an inside joke that whenever we were getting called one by one (to receive a distinction or something) that the best was always saved for last. Then one of them would get called up and you could hear the hushed “Dang it!” coupled with a giggle of victory. Anyway that’s basically how i feel every time my main goes without being featured another day. #1 is probably viper to complete the bookends (since #21 was picto) but i’ll be pretty happy if my job makes the top 5

  • I just realized monk ROF/ROW are now getting new ranged GCDs (right?) Basically mudras except fewer of them so it doesn’t feel like cheating. That’s kinda huge, it feels like it will give just enough leeway for a good melee to keep uptime, and we all know how much the fight designers like to put big mechanics and movement/downtime during burst windows. Monk will probably be my 3rd job to level and gear up after samurai and dark knight

  • No, they just removed any gain from playing nonstandard BLM by forcing 6f4 standard line in order to get your high potency finisher in astral fire and forcing you to do GCDs to recover MP in ice. Also kneecapping font of magic+flare star use in Bozja. Unless the potency of the fire spells is royally screwed up, BLM is going to be a completely static rotation with no skill expression other than optimizing your movement so you can put 5x xenoglossy in buffs

  • Manjaro’s packages being separate from the main arch linux repository is really the kicker. It’s a completely preventable source of dependency issues especially when it comes to the aur. Instructions on the arch linux wiki won’t quite line up with what you need to do on Manjaro sometimes, and eventually you’ll be SOL if you only follow the arch wiki. You won’t understand the components of your system as well if you install Manjaro so a first-time user will have a harder experience fixing their machine.

It’s a classic case of “if it aint broke don’t fix it”. Manjaro fixes a problem that never existed. Arch linux works perfectly as a daily driver. The installation process continues to get easier, and really there is no experience required, if you can follow instructions, the wiki goes into great detail on everything you need to do to get to a working system and keep it that way.

  • Fall Guys event is stupid, but good, because the rewards from it are worthwhile. They put a whole lot of effort into making the emote, mount, and glamour. The hoodie dyes well and has some cool particle/glow effects, you can get a cute hat, etc. I’m not sure what they were going for with the 100 wins achievement title though, that just seems miserable. If it was 25 or something I would go for it.

Aloalo variant is a good experience the first time through, but it does get a little repetitive having to fight the same mid boss 12 times and each other boss at least 3 times to get your mount. Mount again is really good though it will work better with some character models than others.

I haven’t done the criterion but I’ve heard people like it. The trash isn’t as involved but from what i’ve seen the first boss is very difficult. And the savage upgrade item is a joke, everyone doing crit savage has bis anyway so it’s basically equivalent to an ultimate weapon glamour. I’m glad it at least gives a glow. Really it should be a complete weapon drop however, or trade in totem for weapon.

Good patch overall especially for x.x1 content wise

  • Back in my day there was a unique dungeon mechanic and also you could click off Transfiguration midair and die… Younguns don’t know how bad good you have it now that dungeons are so braindead formulaic that SE’s small-indie-company engineers can program a bot to complete them.

Actually I won’t kid myself, the game has been extremely formulaic for several expansions at this point. Like really, every dungeon is a hallway with 12 packs of trash divided into 6 pulls, and 3 bosses made up of reused enemy assets. Did they really have to remove the last remaining piece of personality from their content?

Well as long as DRS exists, I’ll probably keep playing. DRS is by far the best piece of content in the game. That and ultimate, except i’m pug-only and I don’t think I would enjoy pulling ultimate over and over. If the only Dawntrail content to be released was literally DRS 2, I would consider it better than Endwalker and I know there are people who would agree with me.

  • Criterion seems to be a place for the fight designers to test “weird” mechanics similar to the 2nd floor of savage so honestly I have no idea what to expect.

My wishlist is that there will be a jumping puzzle mechanic (lmao). Imagine the boss starts channeling an enrage and you have to get to the top of Kugane Tower before you can hit him. Melee have to do an extra jump at the end to get into range

Also looking forward to more trash pulls where certain combinations of enemies are not pullable together or require stun/sleep/interrupt. Sort of deep-dungeon-like.

Or waiting for a roamer to cycle around, or kiting adds like DRS red golem or minotaurs.
