Great article and explanation on why Proton and its components are such a game changer. Thanks for sharing!
Ironically, Nier Automata is only listed as “playable” on Steam Deck.
Don’t take your toilet shut-off valve for granted. Make sure it still moves regularly, preferably when you’re not millimeters away from getting shit water all over your floor and feet.

Oh, I’d expect a British ship or two to hang out very near the Falklands for as long as he’s in power.
A heads up if you have a G-Sync monitor from that same era: it may not do variable rate with Freesync. I was ready to pull the trigger and upgrade my 1080 Ti to an AMD card when I caught that detail. So now I need to justify the cost of a new main monitor as well if I want to have smooth variable refresh. Good luck!
Two things I’d suggest:
Try another brand of PETG - I’ve heard weird things about MatterHackers PETG but never used it personally. Overture, Polymaker, Prusament, and Printed Solid PETG always behave consistently for me.
Take a look at your heatblock and make sure you’re not leaking anywhere. I tried a 0.8 nozzle when I first got my MK3S+ and got bad results b/c I was leaking out the top and it was stringing badly. I eventually went with a Revo nozzle because swapping is so much simpler.
Very cool!
I got into 3D printing during COVID and it led me to my local makerspace, where I’m now learning woodworking to make a filament rack and other cool stuff. Same for electronics - I hadn’t assembled a circuit since college, but I’ve done several simple to moderate projects to improve my printers this year.
In 2016, the school’s co-founder and director, Susan Gayle Clark, was convicted of child neglect and failing to report and was sentenced to six months in jail.
After looking at the upgrade options (and shopping with your wallet, not mine), I’d say buy a MK4 kit. You’re in a fairly unique position that you aren’t taking apart a working printer; you’re getting a new printer with 2023 electronics and motors for a discount.
However, if sinking that kind of cash isn’t wise for you right now, then build what you have! Or, pick up the MK3S+ upgrade kit for $50USD. MK3S+ is a reliable workhorse, and mine won’t be retired anytime soon. It still prints PETG as well or better than my X1C, if a little slower.
Good luck and have fun with it!
I get what you’re saying - some games aren’t fun on steam deck controls, or just run like a dog.
But, look at it differently - It’s a PC by virtue of the fact you only have to buy it once to use it in both. My 10 year old XPS laptop and my gaming desktop are very different classes of hardware as well, but they’ll both run Plants vs Zombies that I bought once.
I can’t say that about the stuff I bought on Switch and want to keep playing on Steam Deck.
