Have you used the cloud service for photo backup? I currently have an iPhone and it sounds neat to switch to bundling Proton and dropping the iCloud subscription.

I’d probably just use Proton’s mail app on mobile. It’s actually pretty snappy and intuitive, and it has always had the basic features I need.

Spot on. It’s my primary working surface right now and will be mostly for ripping when I have a full bench. Sitting on it, my weight provides the stability, but I can pick it up and take it outside or anywhere.

I’ll use the joiners mallet to knock together joints and to motivate my chisel.

Yeah it’s convenient for some things, but not ideal for others. I might modify it by putting pegs into each leg to hold them in better, because the actual joints arent that good. Besides adding a crochet hook, some people add an attachment to hang down from the edge with the crochet hook to support longer boards with pegs, but I won’t know if that’s necessary until I use it more. The holdfasts dont grip well because it is so shallow, so I’m going to add some scratches to the holdfasts to see if the texture gives some better grip.

I’ll also add a couple more holdfast holes somewhere in th middle for sawing. Near the end of the bench where they are now, the saw sometimes bumps the leg that is protruding outward.

It turned out fantastic either way, and I don’t think anyone will turn you into the woood police.

Yeah, it’s surprising how little information there is to be found on how that was traditionally attached prior to hardware. I thought wood pegs and holes might work but havent tried it yet. I saw one design that had the legs go up flush to the table top and the top was notched and dropped into the legs.

This might be a dumb question, but how did you attach the top to the legs/frame? With wood pegs and holes?

Thanks for the tip for the chamfer. Someone else mentioned that too, so I’ll definitely try that and see if it can reduce the tearout. Im not sure if I’ll put a finish on it, but maybe I’ll try linseed oil. That seems minimal and this whole thing is an experiment anyway haha

I’m not sure what you’re using it for, but I use an ebook reader called eBoox. It’s free with no ads, not sure if open-source. I had bookmarks but I don’t think annotations. I like it because it can open my epub, mobi, and pdf books, change the font and font size, sepia and night modes, has many options for how to change the page, and fairly simple UI. The creator markets it as a cutesy cat thing, but that is only present on the initial setup and then it’s just a regular e-reader app.

I have tried a few. Duolingo seemed to be good for making it fun to get interest but a lot of it was semi-random vocabulary. Try the Mango app for more practical conversation practice. It has flash cards that remind me of Anki that are nice for reinforcing memorization. It is free but I think has a premium option now.

Also, Tandem for practicing conversation with real people that speak the language via text, voice message, call, or video call.

I agree about the ROM. I’d really like to have something that is simple and looks to have continued support when necessary for security and other major updates. I also agree about the camera. It seems to be a deciding factor for smartphones. The last I checked the Pixels had excellent sensors but had some camera software issues that I believe were eventually resolved. I’m hoping that isn’t an issue if I’m just using a basic OS.

I didn’t learn this until about a year ago, but fine china is a type of ceramic, similar to porcelain or bone china. They differ in what mixtures they are made of and what temperature they are dried at.

Follow up question, what do you use for an abrasive fluid? I’m pretty new to sharpening and just bought diamond stones and lapping fluid, but the fluid is semi-expensive. I’ve seen about anything from just water, Windex, Krud Cleaner, and then all sorts of replies saying that each of those wreck the stone in some way. Is there a cheap alternative that you use, or should I just keep buying the lapping fluid?

I have been listening to maybe a dozen of their podcast episodes and find them pretty interesting. I tried a few other ones but they seem to have the right angle and speed that I’m interested in. Mike and Josh really get into some more philosophical aspects that is promoting a lot of introspection in general. I’ll definitely need to check out that binding; thanks for the suggestion.

I remember a podcast on NPR a few years ago mentioning something similar. The psychologist that was on the show was discussing how doing something that does something that requires your full attention reduces anxiety. It’s interesting to see that this can also be applied to reduce PTSD.
