I was the same way. IMO, philosophy is WAY underrated. If the takeaway from intro to philosophy courses is ancient Greeks had some strange ideas about atoms and such, that is missing the point. Below is for anyone that has never touched philosophy at all.
Ethics is NOT what the corporate ethics things say about following the rules. Ethics in this context would raise the question of whether always following company rules is the right thing to do? Is right and wrong objective or subjective? Is something right in some contexts but wrong in others? Which system of thought should you be using (consequentialism, virtue, deontological)? I was just following orders when I murdered those people! By our laws it was legal, therefore right! It is a great way to persuade people and make decisions.
Epistemology is absolutely key to critical thinking. How do you determine what you know vs what you merely believe? Can you trust that error message is accurate? Can you trust your memory? Personal experience? It is a great way to build a world class bullshit detector.
Metaphysics gets you to think about things at a more foundational level. Think about a stop sign. Is it a red octogon with stop in white letters? Not everywhere. It could be a cop or crossing guard with their hand out. It could be a red light. It could be a red sign that isn’t an octogon at all. It is a great way to learn to challenge your assumptions about the nature of the world and things.
I wouldn’t be surprised if that is a take away by some people. The rebuttal:

Clear writing isn’t useful? Think about arguments about phrases in the Constitution. Clarity would make those problems go away. I could name half a dozen STEM applications of quality writing off the top of my head:

It is all the corporations but not how anyone thinks. Corporations want you to buy things. That is all. Corporations shifted it to the consumer with the whole reduce, reuse, recycle thing. The average person in the US buys way too many things. The FIRE movement recognized this in the 2010s. Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin figured it out before they wrote the book Your Money or Your Life in the 1990s. Every dollar you spend = emissions.

Good point. I like to completely escape, be presented with interesting points of view, or be entertained, so I tend to enjoy sci-fi/fantasy, comedy or drama.

In this context, it doesn’t really matter to me if you are the person in the Barbie movie and or an awkward 14 year old that idolizes her/you, but it raises a good point. Before any kind of mass media, Cicero wrote about the power of eloquence and the importance of the wisdom to use it responsibly. That is more true today that 2000 years ago. Social Media gives the most persuasive people an earth sized megaphone. ANYBODY, with sufficient skill can post something that goes viral and have it reach millions over night and influence them including billionaires and politicians.
The aforementioned power gives platforms (and moderators) a lot of power because they control what people see. I’m really hoping for the Fediverse to succeed because I hope to distribute that power across borders and instances. There is still the age old problem of who should be in charge of the various communities. We have seen what can go wrong with Reddit where the community creator has it.
I have seen you post before and had the same thought that it might actually be you, as in Margot Robbie. If I were to become famous, I’d still post things online.
If it is really you, maybe you can answer a few questions about movie production. Do you think the easy access to information now that everyone uses the internet influence how scenes are written? For example, scenes with a character getting hit in the head, knocked out, and being fine. I still see lots of unrealistic stuff like that.
How are you paying for this? Is lemmy.world controlled by you as a private individual? Is this going to be transferred to some sort of non-profit, or business entity? What are the options where you are at? Have you considered the legal aspects of various locations, (e.g. free speech protections, reach of law enforcement, etc)? Since this has the potential to blow up, now is the time to start thinking about these things?
