I’ll play it on my Linux desktop PC anyway, even if I have a Steam Deck. But being able to load it up on the Deck is really cool. I don’t need to buy an extra copy of the game to play either on a high quality console (Playstation 5 Pro or Xbox) or be able to play it on a handheld (Switch), and the save files are managed from a single point of truth (Steam).

I wish more websites would support RSS. It’s one of the best web techniques that are under utilized in my opinion. I know there are services to build a custom RSS and so on, but that never did it for me (various reasons). A simple real RSS would do so much for me.

One of the reasons why this is even possible is, because Valve sticks to current Steam Deck as the base. If they introduced the Steam Deck 2 already, then not only would this mean for developers more to test and optimize for, it also meant the new 2 would be the baseline and old Deck is forgotten quickly. Therefore even if lot of people ask for a Steam Deck 2, its crucial that Valve waits with the update. And honestly, its already impressive what we can play on it. I did not expect Dark Ages on it to play this well.

I also not entirely against Ai, if its ethically correct and used wisely without slop. I am looking forward for 2 major improvements in the future:

• 1. not important throw away NPCs in RPGs with some (local) Ai support when talking to them, this is already explored, and
• 2. multiplayer enemies with advanced Ai acting exactly like humans, with a human vision, reaction and thinking, this would make mulitplayer games possible to play offline without servers, and I even envision that we can download “training” data of other players such as friends or professional celebrities

Not to mention (as you mentioned already) for development. The problem is, the current industry uses Ai reckless, producing slop, and using stolen training data. Also agreed, please don’t create games their story, main plot and gameplay entirely by Ai…

They have to disclose that Ai was used. So you should be able to filter them out. At least in theory. This should be a general setting in https://store.steampowered.com/account/preferences/ . Maybe you could exclude some titles by tags, but I would be careful to not exclude normal and good games by accident. Maybe there is a Steam Curator for this job (does anyone else use the Steam Curators?).

I don’t know of a service that tracks all major repositories to calculate a single popularity index. They are not really comparable to each other anyway.

Depending on what type of application you search for, I think “Flathub” could be one major source. It’s a pretty popular “platform” and not dependent on a certain distribution. There are “Trending” and “Popular” categories too. It’s excellent to find some new software (or to remind an older one exist) in my opinion. Pixnapping attacks begin with the malicious app invoking Android programming interfaces that cause the authenticator or other targeted apps to send sensitive information to the device screen. I have on my old phone still a custom Android /e/OS. It’s a “deGoogled” variant of Android 12 on my S7 Edge. Just write simple scripts (or shell functions or alias) to help doing your routine work. Then you don’t need to remember the commands quirks and only have to remember your own solutions quirks.^^ I wrote such a complex script to help me with youtube-dl / yt-dlp and need to do this with ffmpeg too.

I remember the “switch to tty2” thing too, from old glory Ubuntu days (I mean decade ago at least). Nowadays when I switch to a different tty, it feels like stuff is assigned randomly. Honestly I never got that deep into it to study and don’t understand it fully myself. So don’t ask me about details, I would probably look goofy then.

SDDM is a popular graphical display manager used by KDE as the default, because their previous house made display manager didn’t support Wayland. Gnome has GDM (do they still?) and there are bunch of others. You can switch the display manager too, I think KDE even offers builtin option to change, but I’m not sure right now. The name display manager is a bit confusing, because its about your user login with graphical interface.

Depend on the source and output quality you have. Also do not forget conversion from lossy into lossy format will degrade quality too, even if its most of the time not noticeable. If you have them all in constant 320 kbit/s, then you could probably get a good chunk of space without sacrificing quality much.

As for the software recommendation, it would be good to know what operating system you are on. Windows, Android, iOS, Linux PC?
