The less you know about your history, the easier it is to imagine you’d always be on the right side of it.

  • Video games always used to be an economic way of entertainment. With an amount equal to a restaurant dinner you could be entertained for hundreds of hours.

Nowadays, video games follow the trend of enshitification. Low quality, repeated material, bad gaming experience, data hoarding, the need to be always online even for a single player game and of course, the “you don’t own, we can take it away anytime we want” mentality.

According to the court rulling, if you essentially want to play retro games, you should find a way to access the original hardware and run the software in mostly proprietary mediums like cartridges that could be damaged or corrupted. And the reason you can’t do it is because you may actually have fun!

This ruling is so bongers it blows my mind.

So you should never, ever ever

    1. Use emulators like Retroarch
    2. Find the ROMs of various systems you like in various “archives” through the interwebs for research purposes ofcourse
    3. Use a frontend like ES-DE or launchbox to make things look beautiful.
    4. Scrape content through screenscraper or something similar to make your frontends even more beautiful. 5.Keep in mind that this combo ( Retroarch + frontend) works in mostly cross platform (windows, Linux, android etc.)

After all, as a researcher you have to be able to tinker a little bit.

    Enjoy your research ;)

  • Your family is not eccentric. It’s exceptional. There is a big difference. Unfortunately people are afraid of that, that seems different to what they are accustomed. When they cannot do something the other can, they ridicule it. Being bullied feels like shit. Be there for your daughter and help her steam out all the feelings she has. Help her make alliances with other kids in the school. let her choose to do sports or art she likes. teachers may take her side, but don’t imagine that they’ll do something, no mater how much you complain. I hope my response has some meaning for you

  • I would call ethical piracy any kind of data acquiring that would otherwise be unattainable. A more common example is any kind of software and/or content that you pay and therefore should own and for any kind of reason the seller/provider restricts your acces to it.

    1. Whether it is a movie/series/book/song you payed and for some good forsaken reason you cannot access it because you changed your hardware or your country doesn’t have access to it
    2. Or it is any kind of software that you have to pay a subscription to keep a feature you previously had on a previous version (ex. Adobe)
    3. or a video game that was removed from the service, has DRM and you can’t access it anymore and/or the server shut down and the company doesn’t release the source code
    4. or an even older game you own but the cartridge/cd/disk/cassette is destroyed and or the console is not supported anymore and/or it is abandonwarevand the current owner is not know so it cannot be commercially distributed

Coprorations do not want anyone to own the hardware they sell by denying the right to repair, let alone software. The mere sence is unethical, so it’s ethical to at least acquire software through piracy.
