I’m always home and don’t care if solicitors know it. If they look in the window they walk past, they see me. I used to try to hide but now I just watch them.

I have a no soliciting sign I wrote myself and taped to the door that says simply “no soliciting, no exceptions”. If they knock or leave their shit on my door I report them to the company they came from, as that’s illegal in my area. I frame it as their canvassers needing up-training and remind the company that if it continues they are breaking the law each and every time, and if it happens again I won’t contact them about it, I’ll report it elsewhere. I submit the thing anonymously through whatever contact us portal they have and a bullshit email address, so they can’t tie it to an address.

The only people who are legally allowed to knock are canvassers for political shit (and census people but that’s rare) so during election seasons I have a separate sign that says “I refuse to talk about politics with strangers. Go away and take your junk with you.”

I don’t get bothered much. But I do see people walk up to my door, then leave, at least once a week.

I’ve never had a problem with uninvited guests tho, as I’ve never ever had an open door policy for anyone. If I don’t expect you, you don’t come in. End of.

I don’t know this company but fiber came into my area (central WI) a few years ago and I couldn’t be happier.

Prior to that the infrastructure I was on for cable internet was old and would have frequent problems.

The brand new infrastructure is figuratively worth its weight in gold, imho, even if the company itself is just as crap and your price ends up the same.

Even better, the fiber cables run underground, so other than having them severed when digging, they won’t go out unless there is a major widespread outage. No random branch taking out your service in a wind storm or whatever nonsense.

Idk if it’s still a thing or how widespread it is, but they sell/sold live fish and small reptiles/amphibians as keychains… basically a small soft plastic pouch filled with oxygenated water so they can get crushed or suffocate in a week (turtles can probably survive a bit longer but… regardless it’s gross). First article I found was from 2015, this one is from 2023…

There are therapeutic vaccines, like for rabies, which you only get after you have been exposed to the thing to be treated (in this case, cancer).

Preventative vaccinations are for sure the ones we are most familiar with, but they aren’t the only kind :)

Out of those I’ve devoted a ton of time to rimworld and oxygen not included, are any of the others on your list similar, or others you’d recommend for someone who likes them? I tried dwarf fortress but I found it to be… not my bag. I didn’t get very far into it tho.

I’ve been doing these for years… they don’t work as intended for more than a year or two, and then become pretty unstable. Even the lady who created it went back to low-maintenance (as opposed to zero input) systems after a few years. Still with the dirt and all but not without water movement and stuff.

I had a similar problem with ocarina of time (and lemme tell you having to run around in not one but multiple times was a… blast…)

Sure, most people won’t downvote or harass you just for being a woman (a lot will… we didn’t get the best of Reddit at all, and I doubt the new adoptees are any better…) but they will often enough make things difficult even if they aren’t actively causing problems.

But men of Lemmy (aka the vast majority of the user base since they ran off all the womenfolk) don’t care. They see that as quality control or some dumb shit, because THEY aren’t interested in woman things, so nobody should be, or they think their “as a man” comments should be important or some shit… Whatever the post is about. If it doesn’t cater to them, it can fuck right off.

Which is why cis women make up <10% of the Lemmy side of the fediverse. It’s a disaster for women here.

If that’s true, instead of asking a rather blunt and extremely-easy-to-misinterpret question of individual people, go post a question about it somewhere. The presentation you’ve chosen (I saw the other one in the wild as well) comes across as rude and combative, even if that’s not the intention. It’s a quite bad way to foster open and honest conversation.

Since this Trump thing started rolling a whole month ago, people have been quite openly hostile toward Americans. And like fine, we get it, but many of us -are- doing things, and always have been trying to make things better… and we are getting caught by the same exhausting “you should have done more!!! You deserve it, this is what you voted for!!! Reeeeee!!!” That’s being slung at people who actually do deserve it. It’s really tiring, on top of everything else, to have to defend ourselves and our actions to random insensitive internet people with zero cause. We 75 million active blue voters can only do so much at a time to fix a country of 350 million incredibly diverse people (and we’ve been working at it for years if not decades, this loss was devastating for many of us). Most of whom are either stupid or selfish. Most of whom have never actually seen voting red or blue to have a marked impact on anything, because until quite recently it truly hasn’t made much material difference for your average person.

Before you ask, I’m working on getting my house ready to sell so I can buy some land to build up, solo and with as much manual effort as needed, into an off-grid year-round passive-productive farm (big ask in hardiness zone 4! But I’m 💪 capable!), that forms the foundation of a robust mutual aid network to help everyone I can… tho the fruits (and veggies) of my labor are far too sweet for the vipers that are fascists, so they get nothing but shot. They made this mess and I will do absolutely nothing to protect them from the consequences. Fortunately, they can’t help but tell you who they are. Every aid package or delivery will contain pro-social messaging, about banding together to get through the hard times, about supporting everyone based on need not ability, etc. I’ll also be building additional housing on this land (again, entirely solo, other than electrical), so I can provide soft landing for friends and family, or hire a person to help me in exchange for food and board for their family.

My state (big ag state) has a whopping 3 and 2 of those are hemp. The one that isn’t just hemp doesn’t have an area listed, just the state.

There used to be, but it was mostly men commenting, and mostly men upvoting, which drowns out any actual women’s voices that may have been there.

Pretty sure all the woman-focused subs have shut down.

I don’t really think there’s anything that can be done other than policing your own and letting the platform grow.

It’s a whole vibe thing, not just obvious stuff.

For example, whenever there were questions aimed at women (hey ladies, what’s your hair routine? Sort of thing), it’s nothing but a bunch of men spouting off about what their wives or girlfriends do, and maybe a few actual women, but their comments always ended up buried. Nobody actually wants that “the woman in my life does this, I think…” sort of input at all, except other men (which unfortunately is the vast majority of the platform, so those “as a man” comments get heavily upvoted, even when they are obviously full of complete shit). It drowns out the few female voices that actually are around. And if you correct some dude in a post for women voices, about something men typically know nothing about, you’ll get heavily downvoted for it. Not at all welcoming.

I know we have some strong transfem comms, and I’m all for it because all women are women, but the experience of those women is wildly different from cis women, and a lot of the memes and stuff coming from those comms are sort of… cis-excluding and often very off-putting. Which is sort of the only fem representation on here.

It’s just not friendly for women. And so so many things need to change before it really is.

I only mention it as a caution, like what to avoid, while I’m mentioning other fediverse social media…

Because I’m a woman and most of the people I know who want social media alternatives are also women, and I’m not subjecting them to this shitshow. I like them too much to bring them here.

I tried to sign up for an account, I was going to use it to create long form content, so I picked some tags (which definitely leave out too many broad categories to be particularly useful, and is thus incredibly limiting) that seemed somewhat related to what I wanted to do.

I then looked through the instance list based on those tags, and tried to find one that fit… and I couldn’t, because all of them had some caveat or blurb or whatever that made me go “nope, probably not here…”

The problem is that I had to click through multiple pages to hit those caveats in the instance rules/description during the signup process, and I had to do it for every one I wanted to check out. They weren’t at all listed on the main page, and they probably should be, maybe under a popup tooltip sort of button. As it stands it was a huge waste of time, and I gave up, and lost interest in having a channel. Maybe I’ll browse it if it ever picks up, but frankly the process of signing up to be a content creator is far too onerous.

Maybe that’s a problem with the instance owners and how they have things set up, maybe with the way the whole platform works, I don’t really know. It was pretty consistent though, so I assume it’s a platform problem.
